What Is Life?

A scripted feature film about the legendary physicist Erwin Schrodinger’s scandalous years in Dublin and how they changed the world.

What Is Life? is a feature film that dives deep into the scandalous, but scientifically revolutionary life of Nobel Prize-winning quantum physicist Erwin Schrödinger, inventor of the famous "Schrödinger's Cat" thought experiment.

Forced to flee Hitler’s regime, the brilliant but unconventional scientist finds refuge in Dublin, invited by Irish President Eamon de Valera, a former revolutionary himself who dreams of making Ireland a hub of scientific advancement. As Schrödinger settles in, his libertine lifestyle—including living openly with both his wife and mistress and engaging in relationships with teenage girls—clashes with Ireland’s conservative Catholic society. Yet, amid the scandal, health crises, and personal tragedies, he makes monumental scientific breakthroughs, from proposing the “many worlds” theory of quantum physics, to popularizing the foundational ideas that led to the developement of molecular biology and the discovery of DNA with his groundbreaking book, What Is Life?

Inspired by John Gibbons definitive biography, this film intertwines Schrödinger's dramatic personal life with the exhilaration of his public lectures, exploring how one of the 20th century's most influential scientists grappled with morality, faith, and the very nature of existence itself.
