During the heyday of music videos in the late '90, Paul had the opportunity to work on dozens of them, in many different roles. For this project with the indie rock band The Vestrymen, he wore every hat: producer, director, offline editor, and finishing editor. 

"I grew up with Billy Donohue, keyboardist for The Vestryman (as well as The Blasés in Rockin' Brunswick). He and I threw this together at the last minute. That morning I hired a DP I knew who had a 16mm camera and some leftover film rolls. We drove up from Manhattan to somebody's mom's back yard upstate. I brought my Super 8 camera to catch pickup shots while the band was goofing around. 

This is back in the day when you didn't get to see the footage immediately. Film had to be processed, and you don't know what you got until you're in the color-correction room. But the wait makes it so much more satisfying when those images finally appear and get enhanced with the colorist. 

The band themselves got involved in the post-production process, contributing the little animated object moments that appear throughout the video. They also inspired the complex dissolves and overlays that became a signature of the piece. Not easy, layering on videotape using Pre-Read! (Any old-school editors out there remember Pre-Read?) 

An unfortnuate footnote - The Vestrymen's record company refused to cover expenses, so they never received the master tapes (on 1" reel-to-reel video in those days). Matt Pinfield of MTV's 120 Minutes, loved the band and the video, but wasn't able to broadcast it on his show for that reason. Shame. 

But otherwise, a fun project for me. No one to answer to on this one - I got to take my time and indulge every creative whim. Even years later, I still enjoy revisiting this video—it captures the collaborative spirit of that era and the experimental energy that make music videos so much fun to create."
