Paul directed and edited the scripted feature The Eyes of St. Anthony, starring James McAffrey (Viper, Rescue Me) in one of the actor’s first starring roles: 

“I wanted to make movies since I was 10 years old. So my father bought me a used Super-8 camera from the famous 47th Street Photo near Times Square, and I got started. 

When I moved to New York City in my mid-twenties, I jumped in head-first again and shot this first draft of a script I wrote based on a short story by my bother, Ted. It was about a guy who always loses things - a problem that resonated with me and that I still struggle with! 

The Eyes of St. Anthony was produced by Sarah Bleakley, with whom I also made Cuttime. We were both inexperienced and in way over our heads. I should have spent more time developing the script and neither of us had any idea how to manage a crew that size. They knew it, took advantage and Sarah had to fire half of them a week into the shoot. Wow! Those few weeks were some of the most stressful in my professional life. 

I learned a lot and I’m glad I made that movie. I especially like the scene shown here - Jim McAffrey and Ronald Ballard were great actors and made my novice writing shine. 

The film was distributed by Tapestry International and played in a few television markets like Ireland and South Africa. But it was not successful enough to enable the next scripted project. 

That wasn’t going to stop me from making movies, though. So I gravitated toward documentary. Those projects don’t require all the resources established upfront - a filmmaker can ease into a documentary project gradually.
