PRODUCER, DIRECTOR, EDITOR
The Athletic
“Peach Jam”
The Athletic's short-lived foray into video production resulted in some great stories.
Paul edited features for The Athletic in its early days, reuniting with his Tour De France colleagues Armen Keteyian and VIc Frank, and collaborating with 60 Minutes veteran Alan Goldberg:
"This was my third feature for The Athletic, so by now I had the team's trust. I collaborated closely with producers Sascha Gardner and Kevin Armstrong to develop and structure the script. But they left it up to me to execute. I worked unsupervised in the edit, shaping the story and refining the pacing.
I enjoyed creating these long-form, in-depth features. The process was both challenging and rewarding—combining strong journalism with editorial creativity to adapt The Athletic’s storytelling voice for the screen. But this was also my last feature with The Athletic's video team, which disbanded soon after.
I'm guessing that's because The Athletic's core business was written sports journalism. Video didn't quite fit in with that, despite the high quality of these pieces. They were not well-promoted, and just about impossible to find on The Athletic website, as if the organization didn't know what to do with them. After abanodoning their foray into video production, The Athletic was soon acquired by The New York Times. So perhaps they were right not to dilute their mission.
Which makes these features unique and rare. Happy to share - not sure they're avaialable anywhere else."
