Super Bowl LV
Tease & Sponsored Bumpers
When COVID-19 forces even the Super Bowl to go remote.
Paul has worked on eight Super Bowls since 2001. He was part of the technical team that earned an Emmy award for Super Bowl LV, when Tom Brady won for the home team Tampa Bay Buccaneers against Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs in 2021:
“This Super Bowl was unlike any other. In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic CBS Sports had to figure out how to do most of the production remotely. Our success under these challenging circumstances no doubt won us the Emmy. I had three big screens set up in my father-in-law’s house in the woods of Vermont, where my family was camped out for the duration.
Sometimes the editing for a Super Bowl is very creative, putting together dozens of short and fun bumps, teases, roll-ins and features that enhance the broadcast of the game and preview shows. An example is the opening of this collection comparing the opposing quarterbacks Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes. I worked on it with CBS associate director Brian Jagoda and it was voiced by Jim Nantz.
Other times the editing is purely technical. That could mean anything from quality control and organizational workflow of advertiser billboards for both the studio control room and game trucks, or - as you can see in the second part of this collection - building dozens of sponsored animations and bumpers for the preview show.
For Super Bowl LV, I cranked out more than a hundred of these elements, which aired in over five hours of preview show. Many of these animations look and sound exactly alike, except for a change in sponsor. Speed and efficiency are important, but meticulous organization and QC are paramount. No mistakes allowed!”
