An entire chapter of the book Words In Your Face by Cristin O’Keefe Aptowicz is devoted to an interview with Paul about the making of his film SlamNation: 

“I arrived on my motorcycle for the National Poetry Slam in Portland, with only two cameras to shoot the sprawling four day event. So I hired a bunch of local freelancers to help. Then I sent home boxes of tapes, with no idea what I had. 

Wading through hours of material would occasionally payoff in a spectacular surprise. Like the poem featured here, which stood out immediately. Not only because it’s such a clever piece and a dynamic performance, but because of the opportunity it offered editorially. 

I know the editing of this sequence worked because a couple years later, CNN stole both the thematic concept and the intercutting technique for their coverage of slam poetry. No better compliment.”
