Commercial Spot

A classic commercial

For many years Paul freelanced at post-production houses all across Manhattan, editing a wide variety of diverse projects, including agency spots:

"I edited a few commercials early in my career. That was definitely where some big money would have been if I had pursued those gigs actively. But I didn't. Managing the difficult egos involved in agency work may have been one reason. But I think it was mostly because I never really liked watcing commericals.

But this one was fun. It was directed by a hot-shot who's name now escapes me. My main role was working on the layering and multi-screen imaging. This was off-lined on 3/4" tape so that was no easy task. It required bouncing back from tape to tape with the image quality diminishing with each generation.

I did the online as well, using a new innovation called "Pre-Read" that arrived with the advent of digital videotape. This allowed the editor to add new images to the same section tape of without deleting what was aleady recorded. Made for a much faster and more efficient workflow. But Pre-Read could also be nerve-racking - if you made a mistake on a multi-layered image, there was no recovery. You had to start again from scratch.

This commercial got a lot of airplay and it was always fun to see it pop up on air. I guess I enjoy commercials if I've made them."
