Early in his career, Paul was mentored by Walter Schlomann at the boutique Manhattan post-production house, Chromavision: 

“Chromavision punched way above its weight as far as the caliber of clients we attracted. Much of that success was due to Chromavision’s lead editor, Walter Schlomann. 

Walter was super-talented and became especially popular with rock stars and music videos. They came to Chromavision for him. The highlight for me was when Michael Stipe arrived with his director Jim McCay to finish the REM concert movie, “Tourfilm.” They stayed for two weeks! 

I had the night shift right after, working unsupervised on computer software training tapes (very unglamorous, but still a great training ground for becoming expert on complex, linear, tape-to-tape editing). Often, Walter, Michael and Jim would go long, cutting in to my shift. Of course, I didn’t mind at all, happy to hang and better yet, it meant Michael would often approach me apologetically and thank me for letting them go over. 

Ssshhh - don’t tell - but sometimes, at the end of my shift in the wee hours of the morning all alone, I would thread up Tourfilm’s one-inch master tape-in-progress, and watch what they had completed that day. First audience. Pure bliss. 

Anyway, Walter was also interested in directing. One of his directing pieces is shown here, that I had the privilege of working on. Of course, Walter off-line edited it himself, but I did the online conform and added the colorful graphics. 

It’s also of special value for me because my girlfriend at the time appears in the piece. Good memories."
