Initially developed on spec, Yankees-Dodger: An Uncivil War had an uncertain future after the off-line edit was completed. That changed when Endeavor’s Mark Shapiro sold the project to ESPN Films, who gave it an air-date on ESPN: 

“Director Fritz Mitchell hired me back to work with his editor Paul Carruthers on the color-correction and conform, with only four weeks to complete the process before air.” 

The great archival footage we used in the offline helped sell the movie to ESPN Films. But tracking down so many high-resolution source files to replace random, low-res internet clips was incredibly time-consuming. And the cost for the rights must have been ENORMOUS! 

With Mark Shapiro on board, we knew it would all get paid for eventually. But when? I can only speculate what was causing delays at the lofty executive levels of Endeavor and ESPN Films. Weeks passed during which rights for the footage we needed to complete the film were not cleared. 

When we finally got the green light, and were able to start gathering the hi-res footage, a four-week project had been compressed into only six days before air! 

Emergency measures were required.”
